So you may have heard last week that the ACS came out with new prostate cancer treatment guidelines. No major surprises really. In fact, it's a pretty watered down statement.
They highlight the importance of "informed consent". That's like government speak. Every urologist I know gives detailed informed consent.
The big surprise was the ACS supporting PSA cut offs (>4 ng/ml). Really?! We have 10 years of accumulated data that shows us that strict cut offs have low sensitivity and specificity. Velocity matters. Age matters. Family history and race matter. As we learned from PCPT, there is NO safe low cut off.
